At age 16 or thereabouts, I would go to the Adventure Car Hop on Route 22 in Union, New Jersey.
A “car hop”, in those days, wasn’t just for eating, but for finding ladies. Pretty ones, hopefully!
By the way, these were the days of “Male Chauvinist Pigs”, which I admit we all were! I, myself, never considered trying something which wasn’t wanted by the opposite sex. Especially, when I was smaller than most of my dates and I am sure most of them were stronger than I. I certainly didn’t want to get myself slapped or beat up!
Well, I cannot remember how I met him, but when I did, I was very impressed at Mike’s French Accent, which he “carried with him”, when it was either required or needed. He had a very authentic French accent, but he spoke English like any American would. He could turn it on or off at will! This night, we said to Mike, “Sic ’em” we did so, as we sicced our “French dog” on these poor innocent girls. Mike, without any hesitation, walked, directly over to their vehicle.
He talked to them with his “French Accent” and we could see nothing but smiles on these girls’ faces.
The driver looked “hypnotized” as she gazed at our “weapon”. The other two strained to see who we were and what we looked like, as we stretched our necks to see them!
After about twenty minutes of Mike’s conversational yapping, while our car hop girl became agitated while we took up space in her waiting area, we finally got the “high sign” from Mike.
With one hand leaning on the driver’s side window ledge, the other hand gave us this OKAY … “signal”.
All three of us all jumped into the girl’s car and we all spoke, two in purely American English and “French Mike” doing his thing, never dropping his accent. We had a nice time, yet, I really don’t remember whether or not any of us “Scored” later that night, but this special event was well-worth remembering.
The Adventure Car Hop Incident probably ended with us getting phone numbers and then ordering a burger with fries and finally, we made our waitress happy with a nice gratuity.
Those were good days. Much like the Sitcom, “Happy Days”, it was a happy time in my very Happy Days!
