The story behind the song, “I’m Going Out (the same way I came in)” originally came from my father’s old expression, “I had a hat when I came in and I’ll have a hat when I go out!”
I had hoped this song would be recorded by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. The style and the 4 Seasons sound was, in my opinion, a perfect fit yet Leslie Gore was the last person I would have envisioned as the artist for this song.
But as any smart songwriter, any time a “name” artist is going to record your song, a writer should and must be appreciative. WHICH I ABSOLUTELY WAS!
In addition, the other two songs which I also wrote with Crewe were, “Treat Me Like a Lady” and “Love Goes on Forever”.
With Gore’s biggest hits being the concept of a woman’s rights (such as “She’s a Fool” and “You Don’t Own Me”)
These two songs both appeared in the California Nights album in 1965.
There were a large number of “cover records” of “Treat Me Like a Lady” … by artists such as Maxine Brown, Sherry Bryce, Catherine Denise, Silk & Steel, Zoe Birkett, Glenda Lo Vett and it was in an album named, “Arthur Guitar Boogie Smith LP Mister Guitar.and Vickie Juma.

Finally, the music which I wrote for the song, “Love Goes on Forever” was inspired by the music of one of my favorite Broadway Musical, “Carousel” which was written by Rogers and Hammerstein. This song may someday be successful if this type of music, once again becomes the rage.
